ADVERTISEMENT FOR THE POST OF ASSISTANT PROFESSOR

(Special Recruitment Drive for Backlog Vacancies)


The Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER) Kolkata was established by the Ministry of Education (MoE), Government of India in the year 2006. The basic mandate of the IISERs is to provide quality science education and to carry out research in basic and frontier areas of science involving both undergraduate and postgraduate students. 


IISER Kolkata invites applications from Indian Nationals and Overseas Citizen of India to fill-up positions at the level of ASSISTANT PROFESSOR in the following Departments, for the thrust areas given against each department:

Application Process:

Candidates possessing requisite qualification and relevant experience are required to  APPLY ONLINE. [Assistant Professor]
The last date for submission of applications is 31.07.2025 (17.30 hrs IST).


At least three reference letters from persons well acquainted with candidate's work are essential for consideration of candidature.

Information on Reservations:

1. The Institute reserves the right to fill/partially fill or not to fill any vacancies or cancel the selection process wholly or partially at any stage. The vacant positions in any or all of the categories may be increased or decreased, at the time of each round of selection depending upon the availability of post at that stage. No separate notification will be issued for it.

2. The candidates belonging to categories viz. SC/ST/OBC-NCL/PwD must attach the Caste/Category/Income certificate issued by the competent authority in the prescribed format of the Government of India.

3. The Institute follows the Central list for SC/ST and OBC- NCLs.

4. In case of OBC candidates, the reservation is admissible only to candidates having “Non-Creamy Layer” status.

Further, Candidates seeking reservation benefit under OBC-NCL category must ensure that:

a. Their caste is listed in the central list of OBCs

b. They are entitled to such reservation as per eligibility prescribed in Govt. of India orders

c. Possess the valid certificates in the format prescribed by Govt. of India in support of their claim.

Candidates called for the selection process will have to produce “Caste certificate” in the format prescribed by the Government of India, “Non-Creamy Layer” certificate valid as on date of interview and Caste Validity Certificate (as applicable).

5. NCL certificate for OBC candidates should not be older than one year i.e. the candidate shall obtain and submit the relevant certificate, for the previous financial year (2024-25), which is issued on or after 01/04/2025.

6. The candidates belonging to reserved category are required to attach the Category certificate in the prescribed format of the Government of India, issued by the competent authority, not below the rank of a Tahsildar or from a first-class Magistrate of the place of domicile of the candidate clearly authenticating the category to which they belong to.

7. The reservations for differently-abled persons (PWD) are as per the Govt. of India. However, they shall be required to produce a medical certificate in the prescribed form issued by the competent medical authorities for the purpose of employment. Persons suffering from not less than 40% of the disability in a, b, d, and e category as per the Department of Personnel and Training Office Memorandum No. 36035/02/2017- Estt.(Res) dated 15th January 2018 shall only be eligible for the benefit of reservation and other relaxations, if any, as permissible under the rules.

8. The Institute encourages applications from qualified women candidates.



Selection Process:

Faculty at different levels are recruited in various Departments through Advertisements. The applications received in respective Departments are screened by the concerned Department. The Departmental Faculty Advisory Committee (DFAC) shortlist candidates, based on, area required, research and academic performance, future research plans, efficiency of communication, discussion and quality/aptitude for teaching, research papers published in reputed journals, other publications (books, chapters in book, other than refereed journal articles), potential as researcher/creative worker etc. The short-listed candidates may be called for presentation and interaction with the faculty of concerned department(s). The Institute Faculty Advisory Committee (IFAC) reviews all applications, along with the DFAC recommendations, and shortlists candidates for appearing before the selection committee. The candidates should fulfil the minimum eligibility criteria as on the last date of submission of applications. Additional Criteria to be set by departments at shortlisting stage.


Only shortlisted candidates will be informed by the Institute (by email), about the schedule of interviews as and when conducted.


Eligibility, Pay and Service Conditions:

Eligibility criteria:

a) PhD with first class, 60% marks or equivalent CGPA at the preceding degree in the appropriate branch (as per following table), with a very good academic record throughout.

b) At least 3 years of teaching/research/industry experience (in the area of the post/department applying), excluding the experience gained while pursuing PhD.

c) Minimum 6 publications as first author in Q1 journals (4 publications in Q1 journals for Mathematics & Statistics and Computational and Data Sciences) in the area of the post/department applying


Salary Structure:

a) Academic Pay Level 12 with initial pay of ₹ 1,01,500/-.

b) On completion of 3 years of regular service as Assistant Professor Grade-I at Academic Pay Level 12, shall be considered for moving to Level 13A1 with an initial pay of ₹1,31,400/-, subject to evaluation of performance and antecedents and will, however, continue to be designated as Assistant Professor Grade-I.



Probation and superannuation:

Faculty positions at the level of Assistant Professor at IISER Kolkata have a prescribed period of probation of one year, which may be extendable. The age of superannuation for all faculty positions is 65 years.


Following fringe benefits are also available for the new faculty members as per the Institute norms:

  1. In addition to the pay (as mentioned above), other allowances like DA, HRA, TA, and Employer contribution towards New Pension Scheme (NPS) shall be as per the GoI norms from time to time. For further queries you may please contact Office of the Faculty Affairs (dofa.office@iiserkol.ac.in).

  2. Leave Travel Concession (LTC) by Air for visiting home town and anywhere in India as per Govt. of India (GoI) rules along with leave encashment facility.

  3. Children Education Allowance as per GoI rules.

  4. Reimbursement of medical expenses of self and dependent family members as per Institute rules time to time.

  5. Cumulative professional development allowance (CPDA) of ₹ 3.0 lakhs for period of 3 years may be available to every member of the faculty to meet the expenses for participating in both National and International Conferences, paying membership fees for professional bodies, buying books and contingency expenses.

  6. Reimbursement of Relocation charges: maximum relocation expenses upto
     ₹ 1.25 lakhs or actual whichever is less from abroad and the admissible amount as per TA on Transfer Rules of GoI for others.

  7. State-of-the-art equipment for teaching and research.

  8. Attractive start up and matching research grants.

  9. Computers and accessories, stationeries and books, consumables and minor equipment, travel support for academic visits and collaborative works, etc. as a part of the Academic Research Fund as per Institute norms.

  10. Reimbursement of telephone bills to faculty members as per Institute rule and eligibility.


General information for the applicants:

  1. Regular faculty positions are open to Indian Nationals and Overseas Citizens of India (OCI) only.

  2. Appointment of Foreign Nationals for a fixed period on contract basis is permissible.

  3. Candidates are solely responsible for ensuring that they meet the essential qualifications, experience, and other requirements specified in this advertisement as on last date of submission of application before applying for the post(s). They are entirely accountable for the authenticity of the information and documents submitted. If, at any stage of the selection process or even after appointment, it is discovered that the candidate does not meet the prescribed qualifications and experience, their candidature or appointment will be immediately cancelled or terminated.

  8. The Institute reserves the right to consider to fill or not to fill positions in any of the above/and or any other specialization(s)/Department(s). The Institute has the right to set higher norms, while short-listing, taking into account the specific requirement of the individual department.

  9. The decision of the respective committees shall be final, in this regard.

  10. The Institute reserves the right to reject any application without assigning any reason whatsoever and to withdraw any advertised post(s) at any time without assigning any reason, thereof.

  11. No information will be sent to those candidates who are not short listed for interview.

  12. In case, the candidate has passed and secured CGPA under any other point scale (other than 10-point scale), then the certificate issued by the authorized signatory (not the Mentor/Supervisor/Head of the Department) of the Institute/University to the effect of having secured first class in such degree must be attached. Alternately, the CGPA may be equivalently converted on 10-point scale for determination of eligibility.

  13. The above mentioned CGPA/Percentage/Degree should be awarded by a recognized University/Institute (having the authority to confer/award such degree).

  14. The qualifications prescribed should have been obtained after attending regular courses from recognized Universities/Institutions.

  15. All qualifications, experiences and other criteria will be considered as on the closing date of online application forms.

  16. Higher initial pay may be considered in case of exceptionally qualified and deserving candidates as per GoI norms.

  17. Candidates called for appearing in the selection interview will be paid Second AC Railway fare from place of duty or the nearest Railway Station from the residence to IISER Kolkata and back by the shortest route.

  18. All shortlisted candidates are required to attend the interview in person. However, candidates residing outside India may be permitted to attend the interview online, provided they have recently visited the Institute for a faculty candidate seminar or other interactions with the relevant Department.

  19. Applicants who are employed (regular/contractual) in Government, Semi-Government Organizations or Institutions should send their applications THROUGH PROPER CHANNEL else they will be required to produce a NO OBJECTION CERTIFICATE from their employer at the time of interview. The candidates will also be required to submit the VIGILANCE CLEARANCE CERTIFICATE.

  20. However, canvassing in any form may disqualify the applicant.

  21. All the appointments are subject to verification of caste certificates, credentials, academic qualifications, experience, conduct, and medical fitness followed by police verification of the selected candidates. The appointment orders issued by the Institute to the finally selected candidates shall be provisional until the clearance of character and antecedents, verification of caste certificates are received from the appropriate authority and subject to being found medically fit as per the rules. During the period of Institute service, if the Institute, on its verification, finds any discrepancy in the claims made by the candidate, besides departmental proceedings, suitable legal action shall also be initiated as per Government of India Rules.

  22. The Institute reserves the right to revise or modify at any time any conditions of the advertisement by issuing a suitable amendment or corrigendum, as it may deem fit. Such corrigendum / addendum pertaining to this advertisement, shall be published only on the Institute’s website. It shall be the sole responsibility of the applicants to check our website on regular intervals for any updates. No interim enquiries / correspondence / communication of any sort will be entertained on the matter.

  23. Any legal proceedings in respect of any matter of claim or dispute arising out of this advertisement and / or an application in response thereto can be instituted only in Kolkata and courts/tribunals/forums at Kolkata only shall have sole and exclusive jurisdiction to try and such casuse/dispute.
